Not Sure About Napping #SOL21

Napping comes highly recommended by my husband, my friends, and my colleagues.

I came home today and found everyone out for a walk, so I decided to take advantage of the quiet and empty house and give it a whirl.  I had hoped it would refresh me and/or provide me with some ideas for writing.

Forty minutes later, I woke up to the door closing.  Eventually, I reluctantly pulled myself out of bed, for I was warm, still foggy, and happy where I was beneath the covers.

Unfortunately, no ideas had emerged from my nap, and I was still sleepy.

The sun was still shining and it was fairly warm, so I ventured outside, hoping the fresh air would pick me up and get my brain working.  I was observing my surroundings and looking for something to spark an idea.

Instead, all I could think about was what I would do if it were not a school night - all of which involved more relaxing, not correcting or planning.

So, if it were not a school night, I would:

  • sit outside by a fire with a glass of wine
  • binge-watch this season of Grey's Anatomy
  • hunker down under a blanket and read, but probably fall back asleep
  • work on a puzzle
I know.  I could do these things on a school night, but I was hoping the nap would give me the energy to:
  • go on a walk
  • correct for an hour
  • plan for tutoring
  • clean the kitchen
  • fold the laundry
I am not sure about this napping thing.  While it gave me an idea for a slice, all I want to do now is crawl back into bed.  That is what I call sleeping.

I am participating in the Two Writing Teachers March Slice of Life Challenge.

  1. I will say that I have found some naps to be refreshing while others can just leave you feeling lethargic and more tired -- kind of makes me think of how you described yourself here. I'm not sure of the science behind it...maybe it has something to do with the duration of the nap?

  2. For me it is the time of day that I day. The refreshing naps come earlier in the afternoon. The late afternoon just makes me want to go to bed or I am groggy until about 9:30 then have energy and can't get to sleep when I should. Naps are tricky. But glad you got some needed sleep.

  3. The only naps I can handle on school afternoons are "caffeine naps"--I have a caffeinated drink and then nap for twenty minutes while the caffeine goes to work. Otherwise...off to a long stint in dreamland.

  4. Love that last line, such a funny quip - "That is what I call sleeping." My husband is a daily napper; I am not, fearing that foggy brain that you mention. I'm sure the nap was what you needed though, since you slept so deeply!

  5. Napping for me has to happen earlier in the day. I typically don't get in my bed, because then I would fall completely asleep. I usually lie on the couch. It may be mental, but I think bed vs. couch matters. Sorry that your nap did not render the results you had expected. But, I'm glad you got a Slice out of it.

  6. I agree, naps are so hit or miss. I like the naps that happen when I drift off for a few minutes during a good book. It's like my imagination has gone on overload and just forces me to sleep. Those little power naps work for me.
